I have been interested in the editorials I've seen and commentaries I've heard which wonder about the loss of "community" as the GLBT community has known it through the 70s, 80s & 90s (and even prior to that). Essentially, it comes down to this: does the moving toward the more traditional notions of "marriage" and the public acceptance of same sex couples and relationships mean that the need for a gay subculture is slowly eroding?
I think this is a fascinating question. And, it's probably true to some extent, though the GLBT community will always bring its fresh perspetive and appreciation of irony with it in most cases! Has anyone experienced examples of this? Either the assimilation and its costs or changes or the continuance of the gay community operating, in large part, as it did in the latter end of the 20th century? |

Hi Kathryn,
Looks liek we are neighbors. =0) I don't think that the gay sub-culture is deteriorating because of the movement towards straight culture, I think it is growing. Just as the gayborhoods like boyztown in chicago or Dupont here in DC have expanded and become a very well known and safe haven for gay people bringing our lifestyles into the public eye with a positive and enligthening view, when we begin being able to get married, we will still have our subculture as we still like things to be different. Yes there is the rabbi/priest/monk, cake, flowers, toasts etc.... but we also add our own spins like the two women or the two men on top of the cake, or the rainbow I have seen some of my friends who have gotten married use unstead of something blue. Gay culture will just add to the current wedding culture and give us our own spin instead of traditional weddings taking away from gay culture. I am enjoying your site immensly and these forums are fun =0). I actually live in Arlington as well but put dc down because I prefer to say DC instead of VA =0). Great job on the site! |
