I loved so much about putting our wedding together, but I had a total melt-down when it came to the little things - table decorations, flowers etc.

In fact, as I recall, I had an actual temper tantrum at the florist with my partner and her mom.

If you discover you don't enjoy the details, and your partner doesn't either, it's probably well worth the money to hire a wedding planner so you can focus on the aspects of getting married that are really fun for you.

The cost of a wedding planner really depends on the kind of support you want. Most planners today (GayWeddings.com included) have hourly and flat package rates available. And, you can even order some services a la carte to help the budgeting along. For example, perhaps you only want an introductory consultation to get you started and then want someone to keep the flow moving smoothly on the day of your wedding, but want to do everything else yourself. Or, perhaps you want someone to take care of all logistics and bookings. In the end the price will depend on how extensive the services you require.

Certainly, for a smaller wedding, you're going to be in better shape for your budget across the board and may even be better suited to manage most details on your own. Bottom line, though, the price will be determined based on how much time it will take to coordinate those 20 people in the framework of the event you have planned.

We had the opposite problem of being very fixated on EVERY detail. We seriously had a long conversation with the reception venue about how to fold the napkins. Not kidding - both of us had very strong feelings about napkin folding. My mom was also very planning-involved and very opinionated... fortunately my mother-in-law was less detail-obsessed to even things out a bit. Smiler

I think it varies a lot by how formal and elaborate an event you're planning (i.e. how much there is to be planned) and also how much you want the wedding planner to do (vs what you want to DIY).

Thank you for sharing that - it was so nice to read that I'm not the only one having meltdowns in public focussed on wedding details.

I swear - every time my partner and I were working with the invitations at the store we chose - I had a very noticable emotional melt down. It was AWFUL.

But now they're printed, the font that I hated is okay, and overall, I LOVE THEM!

It is really helpful to keep remembering that you are getting married because you love your partner, not the color of the tulips on the table, and that the whole process should be fun.

It's also good to keep in mind that no one who is coming to your wedding knows what didn't work out the way you thought (or work out at all....) They are just going to be at a great party with loving partners and that is all that counts.
