Question:
There are some who love these. Some who hate them. They are infectious and everybody knows them, which is why the return to haunt us and get us on the dance floor every wedding season.

Which song do you think is the most overplayed wedding song?

Choices:
The Macarena (Los Del Mar)
The Electric Slide (Ric Silver)
Y.M.C.A. (The Village People)
Achy-Breaky Heart (Billy Ray Cyrus)
Celebrate! (Kool & The Gang)

Gina thought all of these were super-dumb until the DJ played them at our wedding and everyone was dancing and posing and laughing and having the time of their lives. Smiler And now she thinks they are all fabulous.

The Chicken Dance... *sigh*

Although, I confess, I went to a wedding a year ago which was very casual and incredibly fun (more of a whole-weekend affair in the country). It was an outdoor reception thrown by the extended families (who made all the food, picked the flowers, did EVERYTHING) and the dance floor was a tennis court. Anyway, they played a French version of the Chicken Dance, and that twist made it fresh enough that I was able to enjoy it. Also, in the outdoors in the forest, it was more appropriate than in a formal ballroom, somehow...

We ruled our DJ with an iron fist, telling him that if any people requested Alan Jackson, he should tell them he has nothing by him, even if he did. Smiler The most cliched overplayed song he did was to play "The Twist", which actually worked out well.

Ahh, I always love the Overplayed song list. My two cents;

1. Dancing Queen should have been one of the top three overplayed tunes on the list. Sorry folks!

2. Seeing the comments about songs couples didn't want played vs how much people loved dancing to them illustrates the point I empahsize with my customers. Yes, make sure the DJ knows what you want and don't want but keep it to a short list of no no songs then step back and let him do his thing. A pro knows what works, when to play certain songs and when to back off and regroup if some stuff just isn't working.

Hokey tunes definitely don't fit for every mood but some, played at the right point in a night can be a blast!

BTW, If you feel that The 'Iron Fist' approach is needed then your DJ didn't give you enough of a sense of comfort with his style and approach to a party before hand. Clarity is important but trust is too and the DJ needs to earn that from you in order to be hired - my belief anyway.

With all the awesome party music out there, I rarely reach for the Macerena and never the Chicken Dance - although the french twist sounds cool!

Have a look at PopCultureMadness.com. They have some fun and quirky music topics you all might enjoy. "The Top @#$*! Songs You Can't Get out of your Head!" is one of my favs!
